treatment for bad breath

Bad Breath And Dental Health

Bad breath, or halitosis, can become problematic and can lead to anxiety. Certain foods, health hazards, and other unhealthy lifestyles can normally be the reasons for halitosis.

Causes

  • Food. When food particles break inside your mouth, it develops bacteria and results in an unpleasant odor. When you consume foods, such as onions, garlic, or other spices, it can lead to bad breath. When you digest these foods, they combine with your bloodstream and are gradually carried to your lungs. This mostly affects your breath.
  • Tobacco items. Smoking itself has an unpleasant odor. Smokers and oral tobacco users are more likely to have gum disease. This is another cause of halitosis.
  • Poor oral regimen. If you do not brush, food sticks inside your mouth, releasing a bad odor. A colourless, sticky film of bacteria known as plaque, grows on your teeth. Plaque disturbs your gums and this can ultimately result in Periodontitis (severe gum disease).
  • Dry mouth. Saliva moistens your mouth and rinses away all the food particles present. A dry mouth can also cause bad breath. This is due to the production of saliva in your mouth that gets minimized. Chronic dry mouth can occur because of an issue with the salivary glands and other kinds of diseases.
  • Medications.  Few kinds of medicines can indirectly create bad breath by contributing to dry mouth.
  • Mouth infections.  Surgical damage even leads to halitosis. The wounds are caused by gum diseases, oral surgery, and other causes.
  • Crash diets. Fasting and low-carbohydrate intake routines can also cause bad breath. It is due to the breakdown of fats-producing chemicals, commonly known as ketones. These ketones have a powerful smell.
  • Other mouth, nose, and throat conditions.  Bad breath can develop from small stones that get built inside your tonsils. Infections or serious inflammation in the nose, sinuses or throat, may cause bad breath too.
  • Other causes. Diseases, like certain liver failure, cancers, and situations like metabolic disorders, lead to breath odor. It is due to the chemicals they produce. Children also undergo bad breath caused by a foreign body, when food particles get stuck in the nostrils
